LRC Attends the Southern African Regional Consultation Meeting on Policing of Assemblies in Africa

On Tuesday, 30 August 2016, representatives of the Legal Resources Centre attended the Southern African Regional Consultation on drafting the Principles and Operational Standards for the Policing of Assemblies by Law Enforcement Officials in Africa at Burgers Park Hotel, Pretoria.

The development of the Guidelines for Policing Assemblies is a partnership between the African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights (ACPHR), specifically the Special Mechanisms on Human Rights Defenders in Africa and on Freedom of Expression and Access to Information in Africa, and the Danish Institute for Human Rights (DIHR) and the African Policing Civilian Oversight Forum (APCOF).

APCOF and DIHR are supporting the Special Rapporteurs to develop tools on the policing of assemblies in support for the implementation of ACHPR Resolution 281 on the Right to Peaceful Demonstrations (2014).

The meeting will consult on a zero draft of the guidelines and tool ahead of their presentation to the Commission its 59 Ordinary Session in October 2016.
