Q: When do I need to give notice of my protest?
A: You need to give notice if there are going to be more than 15 people protesting in a public space. Notice must be given at least seven (7) days before the planned protest.
STEP 1: SEARCH FOR THE NOTICE TEMPLATE AND RESPONSIBLE OFFICER FOR YOUR AREA
In terms of section 3 of the Regulation of Gatherings Act 205 of 1993 (“RGA”), the designated Convenor or Deputy Convener of your protest must give a section 3 notice to the Responsible Officer or to the Station Commander at your local police station at least seven (7) days before the planned protest. If notice can only be given in less than seven (7) days, reasons must be given as to why the notice was not given at least seven (7) days before the planned protest. In exceptional circumstances, notice can be given at least 48 hours before the planned protest.
Locate the notice template for your area in the below folders. Thereafter, complete the notice and give it to the Responsible Officer at your local municipality or the Station Commander at your local police station.
① Locate the notice of gathering for your area (10):

If you do not know who the Responsible Officer in your municipality is, contact your local municipal offices or your local police station.
Make sure that you hand the notice to the Responsible Officer in person and ask him/her to give you a letter proving that you delivered the notice.
*Please note that the LRC is currently in the process of sourcing more notice templates and will continue to update the above folders in the coming weeks.
If you can’t find a notice template for your area move to step 2.
STEP 2 (if necessary): FILL OUT THE ELECTRONIC NOTICE TEMPLATE BELOW
PLEASE READ THIS BEFORE FILLING OUT THE ELECTRONIC NOTICE:
The below notice template complies with the requirements of section 3(3) of the RGA.
Please note that some Responsible Officers will require you to fill out their municipalities’ standard notice of gathering form. While the RGA does not require you to fill out any specific form, it may be best to do so to maintain a working relationship with your Responsible Officer.
Please note that this website does NOT send the notice to your Responsible Officer. You need to check your e-mail once you have submitted the notice and thereafter make sure that you give a copy of your notice to your Responsible Officer or to the Station Commander at your local Police Station, at least seven (7) days before your planned gathering / protest.
In the event that you do not have an e-mail address, please write out all of the below requirements and give them to either your local Responsible Officer or to the Station Commander at your local Police Station, or contact the LRC for more advice.
Please note that in terms of section 4(6) of the RGA, you must notify the Responsible Officer if the gathering / protest is not going ahead.
